Park Ji-Kyeong
Abstract
This study aimed to identify factors that contribute to the challenges faced by the elderly in adapting to a digital society, particularly during a time of accelerated population aging and digital transformation. The raw data from the ¡¸2020 Korean National Survey on Elderly¡¹ were utilized for analysis using SPSS ver. 25.0. The significance level (¥á) was set at .05. The key findings are as follows: Firstly, there was a higher proficiency in smartphone usage among males, individuals aged 65-74, urban residents, households with children, and those without any vision or hearing impairments. Secondly, women, individuals aged 75 or above, those with lower educational attainment, rural residents, elderly individuals living alone, and those with poor vision or hearing encountered greater difficulties in adapting to the digital society. Thirdly, the factors influencing the challenges in adapting to the digital society included being female, being aged 75 or above, residing in rural areas, belonging to other household types, and experiencing visual discomfort, which had a positive (+) impact. On the other hand, educational level and smartphone literacy had a negative (-) effect. In order to bridge the digital divide, it is essential to develop tailored social support systems and policies that address the identified factors affecting the difficulties in adapting to the digital society among the elderly.
